JOB SEARCH TIPS

1) Before You Start Out: Check out https://nycareerzone.org/jobseeker/login.do?url=%2Fjobseeker%2Findex.jsp to learn about career options and find out how broad your target industry may be. Thinking of starting your own business? Find tools at http://www.sba.gov/services/training/index.html.

2) Online job searching is a good start: Going to internet job banks is a good way to apply to a lot of positions at once, but you are competing with thousands of other job seekers. Expand your online job search by seeking job sites that are local to you (including one-stop locations, click here to find the one-stop nearest you), sites that are specific to your line of work, and employer-specific job boards.

Warning: Make sure your e-mail address is appropriate for job searching purposes.  Whenever possible, it is best to use your name in some form such as d.smith@gmail.com.  Never use vanity addresses such as prettyprincess@yahoo.com or superstar@hotmail.com.

3) Newspapers and other print media are age-old resources: Many employers post only in newspapers when they are seeking local employees. Keep in mind that the ads are small, so you will want to take some time to carefully review the ads. The Resource Room at Tomorrow's Workplace holds various local and regional newspapers for your review.

4) Staffing and Employment Agencies: These companies sometimes get a bad rap, but the truth is that they are effective and helpful. The positions they offer generally fall into one of three categories: temporary, temporary to permanent, and permanent. Each option has its merits. Temporary positions allow you to get your foot in the door and earn some money in the process.
Temporary to permanent positions offer an even greater chance of landing a full-time job through your demonstration of competence and work ethic. Permanent positions are available through staffing agencies, despite some myths you may have heard. It is certainly to your benefit to connect with local staffing agencies and put your resume in the pool. You may find the following agencies helpful:

*Adecco (Nanuet): 845-371-6300
*Comforce (Paramus): 201-599-9100
*Cornell Associates (Newburgh): 845-565-8860
*CoWorx (Multiple Locations)
*Hobart West Solutions (Multiple Locations)
*Joule (Multiple Offices)
*Kelly Services (Multiple Locations)
*Knapp Consultants (Rock Tavern): 845-567-6524
*Leafstone Staffing (Multiple Locations)
*Manpower (Multiple Locations)
*nextSource (NYC): 212-736-5870
*Randstad (Multiple Offices)
*RB Search Services (Spring Valley): 845-425-4727
*Resource Options (Glen Rock): 201-655-7099
*RJ Staffing (Nanuet): 845-624-0400
*Starpoint Solutions (NYC): 212-962-1550
*RSJ Associates (CT, higher salary positions)

5) Networking is the #1 method of finding a job: The vast majority of jobs are found through word-of-mouth. Networking is also the most effective way to tap into the hidden job market. If networking means only talking with friends and family to you, you are not alone. Many job seekers are not aware of the wider networking opportunities available. Think outside the box as you seek to discover ways to get to know the people who can help you get a job. The following list may prove helpful though it is not exhaustive:
*Job Fairs
*Labor Unions
*Professional Associations
*Professional Conferences
*Events at local chambers of commerce, non-profit agencies and other community organizations
*Career Center at your high school, trade school, junior college or senior college.
